The firms, funds and institutions that set the terms in workplaces — context, not local listings; never scored.
A map of the recognition ecosystem: which programs are survey-based versus editorial, who administers each, what a badge signals to a candidate, and how national lists differ from regional and industry ones. This is the orientation page a first-time entrant needs before spending a dollar.
The operational playbook — timelines and survey windows, registration and entry fees, hitting the employee participation threshold, communicating the survey internally without coaching answers, the employer questionnaire or Culture Audit, and what to do with results whether or not you make the list.
Annual census versus pulse cadence, question design, Gallup Q12 and Trust Index instruments, eNPS, response-rate targets, confidentiality thresholds that protect small teams, open-text sentiment analysis, and how to read a result without over-fitting to a single number.
Building an employee value proposition from what is actually true, the difference between employer brand and consumer brand, message architecture by audience segment, employee-generated content and advocacy, and how award badges fit into a brand rather than substitute for one.
Careers-site structure and conversion, job-description writing, pay ranges in postings, application friction and drop-off, ATS and job-board distribution, interview scheduling and communication, and rejection experience — the touchpoints candidates actually review publicly.
How Glassdoor, Indeed, Comparably and Built In profiles work, ethical review solicitation and gating policies, responding to negative reviews, rating and response-rate benchmarks, and the reputational and legal risk of astroturfing or incentivized reviews.
Voluntary versus involuntary turnover, regrettable versus non-regrettable attrition, first-year and 90-day attrition, cost-of-turnover models, stay interviews, exit-interview programs, and building a retention dashboard leadership will actually act on.
Job architecture and leveling, salary structures and pay bands, compa-ratio and range penetration, market benchmarking sources, merit-cycle mechanics, pay-equity audits, and the internal-equity conversations pay-transparency laws have forced into the open.
The full rewards package — medical plan design and benefits load, 401(k) match and vesting schedules, PTO versus unlimited PTO, parental leave, mental health benefits and EAPs, caregiving and fertility support, and how to communicate total rewards so employees perceive what they actually receive.
Hybrid and RTO policy design, anchor days and core hours, async work practices, measuring the retention and engagement effect of a mandate, manager discretion versus uniform policy, and how flexibility is now weighted against pay in candidate decisions.
Review cycles and calibration sessions, rating scales and forced distribution, 9-box talent review, OKRs and goal-setting, continuous feedback and check-ins, and separating performance conversations from compensation decisions.
The manager as the single largest driver of team engagement — manager effectiveness scores, span of control, new-manager training, coaching cadence, and the burnout and workload problems created by flattening layers of middle management.
Preboarding, day-one logistics, ramp-time-to-productivity, 30/60/90 plans, buddy and mentor programs, and the direct link between a weak onboarding experience and first-year attrition.
Career frameworks and leveling guides, internal mobility rate and internal-fill targets, promotion velocity, skills taxonomies and skills-based hiring, tuition and development budgets, and succession planning.
EEO-1 reporting, federal-contractor obligations, accommodation and leave compliance, wage-and-hour and classification basics, NLRB protected-activity considerations in policy language, and the current legal exposure around DEI programs and demographic reporting.
The local picture — the Austin Business Journal Best Places to Work program and the Austin American-Statesman's Top Workplaces award, the Austin SHRM chapter and Austin Chamber, Texas Workforce Commission rules, and the cost-of-living-versus-wage-growth pressure that shapes Central Texas retention.
most are either a confidential employee survey with a participation threshold or an application with an entry fee; explain the difference plainly, because it decides whether the badge means anything
one measures employees, the other measures the employer's own submission; say which one candidates and journalists take seriously
below a minimum response rate the result is not statistically meaningful; explain that a published threshold is the single best signal a programme is real
the employee survey instrument and the employer's documentation of programmes; explain how the two are weighted in a certification
define it, then be honest that it is a single blunt question best read as a trend rather than a score
satisfaction is comfort, engagement is discretionary effort; explain why a comfortable workforce can still be disengaged
who you wanted to keep versus who you did not; explain why a single turnover rate hides the number that matters
one gathers information you can still act on; explain that exit data arrives too late to save the person giving it
pay relative to the midpoint of a band; explain why publishing a range forces you to be able to answer for everyone's position in it
describe the analysis and the privilege question - many employers run it under counsel - and send them to counsel for the structure
direct reports per manager; explain that widening spans is why manager burnout shows up in team scores
what an employee actually gets in exchange for working here; explain that it is a statement of fact, not a slogan
explain licensing and expiry as standard terms; the specific rights are in the programme's own agreement
give the test - confidential employee survey, published participation threshold, transparent methodology, meaningful category bands - and let them apply it; do not rank programmes you cannot verify
be honest that many fee-based lists read as advertising to candidates; the value depends on whether the buyer's audience recognises it
leadership ask, protected time, confidentiality assurance and no manager-level chasing; explain why pressure ruins the data you are buying
